Next up in my “Why I Love This Photo” series of creative wedding photography posts is this image of two of the bridesmaids at Carly and Martin’s Brinkburn Priory wedding putting their shoes on. This shot works well for me for two main reasons; juxtaposition and timing. I particularly like the way the two girls are doing almost exactly the same thing at the same time, and they mirror each other in such a way that it gives the image a curious kind of symmetry. One points left, the other right. One is in focus, the other blurry. One appears large, the other small.
As a creative documentary wedding photographer these are the kind of little opportunities I am constantly searching for. There is a bit of misconception that to be a creative wedding photographer means you have to “set up” shots rather than shoot them candidly like this. There are many ways to be creative when shooting documentary; at the end of the day you choose what you include in the image and have control over depth of field and framing. The easy shot is rarely the best shot in these situations.
